The Final Detail by Harlan Coben

I have mixed feelings about this Myron Bolitar mystery. It is #6 in the series and was written in 1999. It features vengeance. If justice is served, that will be in the eye of the reader. Are the bad guys caught? Yes. But … You’ll have to read it to find out the rest. No redemption in this one, for anyone. If anything, several characters go the other way.

Myron’s partner in his sports agency, Esperanza, also his best friend, is charged with the murder of one of their clients. This happens while Myron is away on an unannounced vacation. No one knows where he is. When he returns, he and Win (his psychopathic sidekick) investigate to find out who really killed one of his clients, even though Esperanza tells him to stay of it.

The mystery is complex and I didn’t see the ending coming until almost the end. Always a good thing with a mystery. The dialog between Myron and Win is amusing. I’m a fan of the sidekick who is the muscle and does the dirty deeds. Myron keeps a muzzle on Win in this book, though. Myron digs himself in deeper as he gets close to the truth. Good suspense and some red herrings. The book is well written, and I laughed out loud at several places.

However, the book is full of sexual deviancy. If you’re not into sexual content, sexual innuendos, and sexual relationships outside of heterosexuality, then this book may not be for you. It has its fair share of profanity, but not over-the-top. Some graphic violence, but not gratuitous. I’ll rank this one eleventh so far this year. It’s four stars for me with the plethora of sexuality losing one star.
